Fall is an exciting time in northern Michigan, as gourd enthusiasts display their prized pumpkins at farms and alongside roadside stands.

Bakeries, coffee shops and restaurants breakout recipes that include my favorite fall spices — allspice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. Yum!

We put away our flip flops and boot season begins again. I love shopping for fall outfits and boots at unique boutique stores peppered throughout towns along our favorite lakes and bays.

All mentioned above has a theme: local. Northern Michigan’s fall offerings are so impressive, there’s no need to buy clothes on Amazon or book a trip to another state. It’s all right here.

Starting in mid-September, locals place bets on when the area will see “peak color season.” We then argue over the best places to hike, drive or even paddle to see splashes of bright orange, vibrant reds, purples and yellows that paint the trees.

Throughout the pages of this edition of the Grand Traverse Scene magazine, you’ll be guided to the best fall color routes on paddleboards, kayaks and canoes.

You can be sure to find the latest autumn fashions with our “Meet the Shopper” story, and you’ll also get the scoop on regional trips worth taking during the fall season.

And please take a moment to read about our talented contributors. Each of them bring life to this magazine through their descriptive storytelling and captivating writing, and we appreciate their hard work.
