Speedrun Mode is one of many new features to the Last of Us: Part 1, allowing players to time themselves as they race through the game.

The Last of Us: Part I, a rebuild of the original PS3 game, is offering veteran players a new place to show off their skills in the game: Speedrun Mode. Though speedrunning is not unique to The Last of Us community, this is the first time a Speedrun Mode will be available as part of the base game. This mode displays a timer in the corner of the screen, allowing players to watch their time easier than on a different display. This timer even pauses during cutscenes, a feature accepted in The Last of Us’s speedrun community.

Players who have pre-ordered the base game will not receive an early unlock of the game’s Speedrun Mode, but players who have purchased the Digital Deluxe or Firefly Edition of the game will. If either of these pricier versions is purchased, Speedrun Mode will be available as an early unlock, and for regular editions, unlocking this mode will require them to beat the game. For players who already Speedrun the game, beating it quickly will guarantee that Speedrun Mode is available upon a second playthrough.

The Last of Us: Part I Digital Deluxe Edition is available for $79.99, giving players the Speedrun Mode from the start, alongside more modes and cosmetic features. For players who only want the new modes from the beginning, this is a $10 price increase from the base game. Firefly Edition will retail for $99.99 and offers more perks than the Digital Deluxe Edition, though both come with an early unlock of Speedrun Mode.

Speedrunning a stealth-based game like The Last of Us: Part I can be pretty challenging, especially for new players. It is recommended that players should get a feel for the new controls and new features before attempting a full-blown Speedrun of the game. On the first playthrough of The Last of Us: Part I, many new players will not realize that running is almost always an option. Killing every enemy in a given area is always an option and will guarantee free reign of the land while searching for items, collectibles, and ammo, but it is certainly not required. Many areas simply have an exit point that needs to be reached before proceeding. Make it there as fast as possible.

Aiming practice and timing shots are also crucial for moments where running is impossible. Most enemies in the game move slowly unless they spot the player, which they will then begin running and hiding. Learning to practice aiming at these enemies in different situations will help a Speedrunner move quickly through levels. The typical stealth tactics may only slow the player down.

The rest of the skills to do well in the Speedrun mode likely will come from practicing new mechanics in The Last of Us: Part I and route memorization. Some moments will require precision in when to jump, when to run, and where to hide. After a couple of playthroughs, however, players can begin to formulate their own routes on Speedrun Mode.
